i get this email today. it starts off like this:
Dear Sir/Madam: My name is Bhisma Thapa and with Dynamic Software Consultants based out of Irving, TX. I came across your resume on Dice/Monster.com and I am very interested in speaking with you regarding the following requirement: If you are interested, please forward your updated resume in a word doc. along with your hourly rate on W2 basis, and when you can start work in Frederick, MD.
you know, if you want to have people interested in your position, can you at least try not to make it look like a form letter. it's kind of a turn off. it reminds me of old telemarketers. lol.

this company works in funny ways. we're in a mode where we're trying to save money anyway we can. cut backs in lots of areas. apparently cut backs were made in handwashing soap in the bathroom. they would be out of soap for over a week. how did they solve this problem? by adding more soap? nope. by changing the soap dispensers. umm... don't you think changing a perfectly good soap dispenser would cost more then just adding more soap to it? maybe i should make a cost savings suggestion. >.

i was checking my facebook this morning and glanced over at the little box that suggests friends that you might know. i saw my cousin show up there. i find it interesting because we don't have any friends in common and we don't have any other family members connecting us, we don't have any networks in common, she lives in missouri and i live in ny. how did facebook know to suggest her to me?

today's woot features a cheap luggage set for cheap. their marketing dept is incredible cuz at the bottom they state:
"Also makes a great thing for your cat to destroy! Show your cat you love them with a Carlisle 3 Piece Luggage Set! Cheaper than a scratching post! Feels more forbidden! Possibly dangerous to the cat! What a perfect gift!"
and the sad thing, at $29.99, it almost is cheaper then a scratching post. i may have to get a set for my kittens to destroy.

this morning, my house had a stroke. what i mean is that over half of the house lost power at just before 8 am today. i know what time because i heard something short out and watched the ceiling fan in my bedroom start to slow down and that was around 7:45 or so. thinking it was just a simple short, i checked a few other things and not much seemed to turn on. opening my main circuit box, i did not see any circuits trip, they were all still in the "on" position. after searching my house some more, i find that a lot of things don't have power. thankfully my fridge was still running. my computer even turned on so i could do some quick research which didn't turn up too much useful information. i think more of my house is without power then is. i don't think i'm going to like this... may need to call an electician if nothing obvious turns up. given the age of the house (and the likely age of the wiring) it might get hairy. :(

i'm a little frustrated with the people conducting job interviews. they all seem to imply C and C++ are radically different languages. do i really have to get a certification to prove i can quickly jump into C++ after having used C for... going on 10 years of real world experience? what does it matter that i don't know what the STL are or that i can't name the object oriented design methodoligies i've used. are they really so important that i can't learn C++ on the fly? i'm thinking of picking up an OOP class just to fill in the gap.

today i discovered that dunkin donuts has discontinued their blueberry bagel. i almost always got that bagel. strange.
side note: i hate the new livejournal homepage. they took out the login corner and the page is laid out stupidly, not that i ever cared much about what was on the homepage, still, it looks dumber now.

if you're reading a job application and come across a statement like this: "applicants must generally not have used illegal drugs within the last twelve months", how would you interpret that? my question lies in the use of the word "generally".

you can always tell how much someone really cares about you when your ankle has been giving you grief for the last 3 months and they either ask "how's your leg?" or "how's your foot?" or they say "same thing" when you tell them it's your ankle. sigh.

i had a follow up appointment today for my ankle. i remember the last time i saw him, he said i didn't need crutches anymore and gave me an ankle brace. he said i'd be on that for 4-6 weeks. follow up appointment 3 weeks later and he says i don't need that anymore but i have to get lifts for shoes. if i were a woman, this wouldn't be a problem, just wear high heels. since i'm a guy, i'm not going to do that. :p i do need to walk in shoes that are not flat though. are lifts something they add to the shoe or are they an insert that i can put into multiple shoes? guess i'll have to find out. so anyways, the doc also said 6-7 months of healing before the tendon is strong enough again for "normal activities". so this means i'll be bored all summer, but i'll be ready just in time for ski season. :) unless he's giving a conservative estimate like he did with the ankle brace and it's really only 5 months instead of 6... hmm....

this morning i finally got my answers. 2 weeks on crutches and i finally know what's up. after x rays at hunter mountain (on a cold uncomfortable table twisting my ankle in not very pleasant positions), 2 examinations by an orthopedist and an mri (45 minutes of uncomfortably wanting to take a nap but unable to), it's been determined i not only have a high sprain but i also have achilles tendonitis which in this case is a partial tear in the achilles tendon (the one that runs down the back of your ankle and runs into the ball of your foot). i have been complaining about the other side of the ankle for a few years (ever since i started running) but that's just arthritis the doc said (at my age? no wonder he said i should slow down).
so i got a walking ankle brace that covers the entire lower portion of my leg below the knee and keeps my ankle from moving. i've got to rest it and massage it for the next 4-6 weeks to make a good recovery. i'll probably end up with arthritis in that part of the ankle too with any luck. might as well just shove my foot up and break it off in somebody's.... you know. but i suppose i'll ignore the doctor's advice and continue my activities as they were. you only live once.

in a matter of weeks, i will be the proud dad of a new kitten. i don't know if it's a male or female yet, they are only 2 days old at the moment. they're very soft and very tiny! i need a name though. suggestions so far are:
peanut azure 42 marvin hendrix monkey alexis
any other ideas or if you like one on the list, you can vote for that one. and no, i was not the one who thought of naming it 42 first.
